Sewer and storm-water drainage pipe

Underground, non-pressure uPVC pipe for sewage and storm water that flows by gravity.

OVERVIEW

What the job needs

Gravity sewers and storm-water drains carry flow downhill to a treatment works or outfall. The pipe isn't under pressure, but it has to carry the weight of the soil and anything on top of it for decades.

Our sewer and drain pipe is made to SANS 791 in two grades, heavy duty (HD) and normal duty (ND), from 110 to 500 mm. It is cream, so it's easy to tell apart from pressure pipe on site.

WHAT MATTERS WHEN CHOOSING

  • Pick the grade for the loadHD has a thicker wall for deeper trenches and higher soil or traffic loads; ND suits standard depths and loads. The design engineer specifies the grade.
  • Keep the fallGravity drainage depends on a continuous fall. Lay to the design levels and keep the bedding even so the line doesn't sag.
  • Bed it properlyLay pipe on bedding free of stones and backfill in layers, as the project specification sets out.
  • Pumped sewage is differentSewer pipe is non-pressure. For pumped sewage rising mains, use uPVC or mPVC pressure pipe.

QUESTIONS

Common questions

More in the technical guide and the glossary.

What's the difference between HD and ND sewer pipe?

Heavy duty (HD) has a thicker wall for deeper or heavier-loaded trenches. Normal duty (ND) suits standard depths and loads. Your engineer's drawing will say which.

Can I use sewer pipe for a pumped line?

No. SANS 791 sewer and drain pipe is non-pressure pipe. Use uPVC or mPVC pressure pipe for pumped sewage rising mains.

How long are the sewer pipes?

6 m effective length up to 315 mm and 5.8 m from 355 to 500 mm, each with a factory-fitted rubber seal in the socket.
